When you look at the butterfly you find an array of colors and sizes dependent upon what part of the state or country you may be, but this delicate creature flits through gardens and dances in the breeze. It’s amazing how the butterfly recreates itself in four very different stages of development (including the caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. The ultimate transformation which symbolizes so much. Considering its biological marvels it’s no wonder how revered the butterfly is with many cultures and spiritual traditions.
Many of the cultural and spiritual symbolisms start with Transformation and Rebirth ~ Freedom and Liberation ~ Hope and Positivity ~ Soul and Afterlife ~ Divine Feminine and Beauty ~ Personal Transformation.
In the Native American Cultures, they believe the butterfly symbolizes hope, joy, and positivity bringing comfort and encouragement.
In the Greek Mythology the butterfly is associated with the soul and journey from the earthly realm into the divine.
The Aztecs and Mayans believe the butterfly represents the souls of warriors and ancestors who bring messages from the afterlife.
Western Culture links the butterfly to divine feminine, embodying grace, beauty, and transformation associated with goddesses of love and fertility.
Many times, you find the butterfly adorning jewelry, home décor, and in gardens harnessing transformation and uplifting energies.
No matter the varying beliefs across the many cultures, the butterfly represents and inspires people to embrace major transformation by trusting in the process helping many through difficult and uncertain times.
But what can you learn from the butterfly that you can implement into your life? First, we need to look at the makeup and life of a butterfly.
Butterflies are known for colorful wings with vibrant and intricate patterns that can serve as camouflage or warning signals to predators.
Butterflies have clubbed tip antennae’s helping them with balance and detecting scents.
Butterflies are known to be early risers and early sleepers.
Some butterflies will migrate thousands and thousands of miles simply to breed and feed.
The butterflies’ taste receptors are on their feet allowing them to identify plants for feeding and laying their eggs.
Butterflies, upon emerging from their cocoon, while drying their wings must construct their own proboscis to drink from flowers, since they have no traditional mouth to chew and eat food.
Butterflies’ eyes are very sensitive to light allowing them to detect a range of colors including ultraviolet light that not only helps them find the right flowers, but the right mate as well.
Unfortunately, the butterfly’s lifespan is not very long, many times only lasting a few weeks, yet varying from 24 hours to months by species. However, they make the best use of this time focusing on reproducing, some involving long-distance migrations, allowing their species to thrive.
With these many traits what can you learn from the butterfly to help you in your life? Based on how these fascinating creatures live their lives we can see that they are driven and can manage to do much in such a short period of time. So, let’s break down the traits you may want to implement within your life.
Camouflage/Vibrance: Even though many times we work to blend in, when we learn to be our vibrant selves is when we truly show our inner strength.
Balance/Scents: Much of your life I’m sure you’ve been told to find balance. But sometimes that balance comes into play when you stop to take a breath and, as they say, smell the roses.
Early Riser: They say the early bird gets the worm. When you take the time to get up early you start your day with more time, and in a much better mood. In fact, they say early risers have a much better disposition than those who sleep in.
Light/Color/Energy: When you take the time to truly see the world and the colors around you is when you find light in a world that for some may seem dark and dim. You also tap into a new energy that you didn’t know you had.
Receptivity to change in one’s identity: They must adapt and cannot resist the stages of growth and change required in their life cycle. When resist life’s changes, we sacrifice the rhythms and experience of life itself.
Short Life Span: Many say that when you treat each day as if it were your last, you tend to appreciate your surroundings more and the people within it.
You can learn so much about yourself and life thanks to the butterfly by embracing change, trusting time, not rushing into things, finding the stillness in life, and celebrating each moment. Some of the ways you can do this is through:
- Mindfulness
- Journaling
- Meditation
- Breathing Exercises
